Project Name:
Going Green at the Beach Demonstration House
Client:
Porterworks
Services Provided:
Landscape Architecture
Location:
Stanwood, Washington
Project Description:
Selected
to design the green roof for this award-winning green demonstration home, Triad
Associates’ landscape architect,
David Hilgers, went on a sustainable
treasure hunt. First researching and selecting the roof system for the project,
then contacting the roof component supplier, who helped him locate and purchase
surplus materials from another user. Then David got Cedar Grove involved. They
agreed to pickup, store and care for the components while waiting for
construction. The Triad team also spent a couple of afternoons adding plant
material and installing the green roof just in time for the project open house
and public tours. The modular, GreenGrid® roof system covers
approximately 400 square feet over a den addition and porch. Each 2’x2’ grid
measures 4” deep, contains a lightweight soil mix specifically designed for
green roof applications and weighs about 50lbs when filled. The plant types
selected are a mix of drought-tolerant sedums, fescue, and lavender, which
perform well and aesthetically add to the “roofscape.”
